6. On 23 April 1494, the Florentine illuminator, Attavante contracts with Chimenti di Cipriano di Sernigi, citizen and merchant of Florence, for the illumination of a Bible with commentary of Nicholas de Lyra in seven volumes with, in addition, a copy of Peter Lombard on the Sentences. Forms of decoration are laid down in accordance with a specimen quire and rates of payment are stipulated for different parts of the illumination, for instance twenty-five gold ducats for the ‘principio’ of each volume (one of these is to be finished every two months), etc. Chimenti will pay Attavante twenty-five gold ducats a month and pro rata week by week, with fines if the work is not completed to Chimenti’s satisfaction or on time. At completion Attavante wishes at least a hundred gold ducats to be owing to him, and Chimenti is to pay the final balance due all together.
