During the years this catalogue was in preparation, the gratitude of all participants goes to a series of directors of the Gallery: Lamont Moore, Andrew Ritchie and Alan Shestack, as well as to Stanton Catlin, who all firmly supported the presence of the art of ancient America. Andrew Petryn as Conservator helped greatly with technical studies. The photographers in the Gallery, among them the late Emiddio De Cusati, Sheila Hicks, and above all Joseph Szaszfai recorded the collection in the archive administered by William Cuffe. Gallery staff members, notably Caroline Rollins, edited various articles for the Yale University Art Gallery Bulletin, as cited in the References. Robert Soule and his son, Robert, Fred D’Amico and Richard Moore generously helped us to move objects when needed for study. In the arrangement and editing of the catalogue Sue Allen and S. J. Muirden brought text and photographs into their present order.
