This catalogue and the complementary installations mounted at the Art Institute of Chicago from June 2006 through January 2007 grow out of a decade of quiet work on the collection of Mexican broadsides housed in the Department of Prints and Drawings. Acquired and exhibited in the mid-1940s, the collection had nevertheless remained little known and under-studied. Thanks to the efforts of a handful of curators, conservators, and outside scholars, it has now been catalogued, preserved, and researched so that it may be examined and enjoyed by the public.
On behalf of the Department of Prints and Drawings and the author, I am pleased to thank two scholars whose work has been important to the development of this project. Thomas Gretton, University College, London, made several visits to the Art Institute to share his expertise in this area. The work of Patrick Frank and his advice on the collection in past years are also gratefully acknowledged.
At the Art Institute, Rachel Freeman, Andrew W. Mellon Fellow in Paper Conservation, and Karen Huang, intern in the Department of Prints and Drawings, made valuable contributions to this project through technical study and research. Mark Pascale, Associate Curator of Prints and Drawings, has played a leading role in bringing more attention to the museum’s broadside collection. The catalogue and exhibition have been nurtured by a team of dedicated Art Institute professionals: Judith A. Barter, Anikó Bezúr, Jack Brown, Francesca Casadio, Jay Clarke, Kristi Dahm, Stephanie D’Alessandro, Douglas Druick, Nicole Eckenrode, Robert Eskridge, Amanda Freymann, Chris Gallagher, Barbara Hinde, Sarah Hoadley, Suzanne Folds McCullagh, Kim Nichols, Jeff Nigro, Caroline Nutley, Christine Conniff-O’Shea, Karin Patzke, Susan F. Rossen, Bart Ryckbosch, Mardy Sears, Elizabeth Stepina, and Harriet Stratis. In addition we wish to thank Spanish-language translators Adriana Rosado and Luis Albores and volunteer Janet Lafley.
We are grateful to James Cuno, President and Eloise W. Martin Director, for his support. The catalogue received crucial contributions from the Community Associates of the Art Institute of Chicago and The Regenstein Foundation. Aspects of the installation were made possible by a generous donation from Tom Baron.
Finally, it is my great pleasure to thank Diane Miliotes, guest curator for the Posada project and now Research Associate in the Department of Medieval through Modern European Painting and Modern European Sculpture. Her months of research and careful study of the Mexican broadside collection serve to advance our understanding of the museum’s holdings in light of recent scholarship. We owe her a debt of gratitude for making this material both accessible and meaningful to new audiences.
