Most of the important publications on German Romantic painting are in German, though a number of studies of substance do exist in English and French. In the following list I have put an emphasis on these, as they are cited less frequently in German-language bibliographies. I have also included the principal German publications. Those wishing to find a fuller list of German publications should consult: H. von Einem, Deutsche Malerei des Klassizismus und der Romantik, 1760–1840, Munich, 1978; H. Lietzmann, Bibliographie zur Kunstgeschichte des 19. Jahrhunderts, 1940–66, Munich, 1968. Additional bibliographical studies by H. Lietzmann have appeared in editions of Zeitschrift für Kunstgeschichte.
Each group has been arranged chronologically.
