Bibliography
This bibliography tends to inclusiveness on the grounds that future scholarship is best served by a wide-ranging reference base. An apparently trivial review or occasional piece may, for example, acquire a hitherto unforeseen relevance within a new conceptual framework. But, pace Henry James, relations must stop somewhere. Consequently, books and exhibition catalogues other than monographic studies are limited to those in which Rothko plays a major or historic part or which shed significant light on his work. These are listed first in each year, followed by articles in alphabetical order of author or author’s initials (if anonymous, by order of title). Earliest publication dates are used, unless there is a subsequent revised edition. Citations of unpublished writings are mostly restricted to academic theses. It has been impractical to trace page numbers for some of the earlier or more obscure newspaper articles, but such references have nevertheless been included in the interests of comprehensiveness. The preparation of this bibliography was assisted by Isabelle Dervaux, Anna Pegler Gordon, Laili Nasr and Paul Roth.
