Women and the Making of the Modern House: A Social and Architectural History
No matter how many times one has visited the Schröder House in Utrecht, the Netherlands (plate 1), the sight of it at the end of Prins Hendriklaan is always a happy surprise. Compared to its somber neighbors, dark brick row houses that line the street in an orderly series of doors and windows, the Schröder House seems fresh, playful, and filled with the promise of new discoveries, as if it had been assembled from the parts of a child’s building toy.
