One of the great pleasures of working on the history of London is using the outstanding archives and collections on the subject. I am indebted to the curators and librarians who helped me to explore these collections, shared with me their encyclopaedic knowledge of Victorian London and were a mine of information on the objects and texts in their care. In particular I would like to thank Mireille Galinou, Cathy Ross and Alex Werner at the Museum of London and the staff of the Museum of London Archaeological Service. Ralph Hyde and Jeremy Smith offered advice and help throughout my research in the Department of Prints and Maps at the Guildhall Library. Staff at the Department of Prints and Drawings at the British Museum, Chelsea Public Library, City of Westminster Archives Centre, London Metropolitan Archives, London Transport Museum and the University of London Library were also endlessly patient and enthusiastic about my project. Many friends and colleagues shared their ideas and material with me, in particular Deborah Cherry, Steve Connor, Costas Douzinas, Lindsay Farmer, Jane Gough, Frank Mort and Michael Slater. I have learnt much from these people and places.
