Appendix C: The Preserved Screen Tests
Since 1995 the Museum of Modern Art in New York has been restoring and preserving the Warhol Screen Tests (as well as many of Warhol’s other films). By 2005, 279 Screen Tests have been preserved, out of a total of 472.
For the sake of convenience, the Screen Tests were assembled into reels for preservation and distribution, with ten Screen Tests per reel. (The only exception to this rule is MoMA Screen Test Reel 12, which has only seven Screen Tests.) The Screen Tests were assembled and preserved according to the numerical order in which they had been internally catalogued by MoMA; that is, the ordering of the Screen Tests on the reels is for the most part entirely random in relation to dates, content, stylistic considerations, or the order in which they were actually shot. One exception to this rule is a group of Screen Tests from The Thirteen Most Beautiful Women (ST365), which were found stored together in a box and were therefore catalogued in order by MoMA; they have been preserved together in Reel 25, rolls 5–10.
Another group of original Screen Tests was found spliced together in a reel titled Original Salvador Dalí (ST367); this reel has been preserved by MoMA under the title Salvador Dalí. In this book, Salvador Dalí has been catalogued in Chapter Five; the individual Screen Tests from this film have also been catalogued alphabetically under the names of the individual people in them. The Screen Tests found in Salvador Dalí are not included in the MoMA Screen Test reels listed below. Also not included in these MoMA reels are the two Bob Dylan Screen Tests preserved in 2005.
Four of the films preserved as Screen Tests by MoMA have not been catalogued as Screen Tests in this publication. As further information became available, it became apparent that Alan Marlowe/Diane di Prima (MoMA Screen Test Reel 13, no. 8) was not a Screen Test but a separate short film from 1964. Similarly, Denis Deegan (MoMA Screen Test Reel 13, no. 10) turned out to be part of a longer portrait film of Deegan from 1963. Although the 1964 double-portrait film Philip and Gerard (MoMA Screen Test Reel 19, no. 7) is as static as most Screen Tests, its complex visual and psychological content suggests that it should be considered a film in its own right. And Steve Holden (MoMA Screen Test Reel 22, no. 3) has been identified as one roll in a longer film from 1964 called Steve Holden Drunk.
During preservation, original Screen Tests were spliced together head-to-tail in groups of ten onto larger reels; to avoid confusion between similar films, the MoMA cataloguing numbers were written on the clear film at the head of each Screen Test. The assembled reels were then sent to the lab, where two negatives were generated for each 1,100’ reel. The “release negative” is used to generate positive prints for exhibition. The “archival negative” is placed in climate–controlled storage and preserved as archival material. Once preservation was complete, the assembled Screen Test reels were disassembled, and each individual Screen Test was replaced in its original box and returned to climate—controlled storage for preservation as archival material. Many of the frame enlargements in this book were made from the preserved Screen Tests in MoMA Reels 1 through 23; unpreserved Screen Tests were photographed directly from the camera originals.
The Screen Tests have been preserved by The Museum of Modern Art with funding from The Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts, Inc. 16mm Screen Test reels may be rented from the Circulating Film Library, The Museum of Modern Art, 11 West 53rd Street, New York, N.Y. 10019.
