Conventions
‘Aestheticism’ and ‘Aesthetic’ are capitalized when they refer to the historical artistic movement under consideration in this book. The uncapitalized forms, ‘aestheticism’ and ‘aesthetic’, designate the more general ideas associated with the terms in art-historical and theoretical usage.
Authors of anonymously published exhibition reviews and articles in Victorian periodicals are included in square brackets when their identities are known. Attributions of authorship for articles are from The Wellesley Index to Victorian Periodicals 1824–1900, ed. Walter E. Houghton (Toronto and Buffalo: University of Toronto Press, 1966–89; electronic edition on CD-Rom, updated, 1999). For attributions of exhibition reviews, see Elizabeth Prettejohn, ‘Aesthetic Value and the Professionalization of Victorian Art Criticism 1837–78’, Journal of Victorian Culture 2, no. 1 (Spring 1997): 71–94.
